Great Plains Native Arts Market
Saturday, July 18 in Main Street Square
3rd Gathering of People, Wind, Water building Native Art market momentum
RAPID CITY – Building on the first two Native art markets, the 3rd annual Great Plains Native Arts Market and cultural celebration, set for Saturday, July 18, at Main Street Square in downtown Rapid City, continues the momentum established in 2013 and 2014; the art market runs 10am to 6pm with 50 booths of traditional and contemporary artwork with live performances throughout the day on the stage, culminating with Scatter Their Own and Frank Waln at 6pm.
“We work hard at being artist friendly, whatever we can do to help them have inventory, make sure their day goes well, we want them to have a successful experience and keep coming back,” said Anna Huntington, part of Arts Rapid City and a member of the Native Art Market board, “we’d love to see it continue to grow, there were about 2,500 people who attended last year, we had 38 artists participate last year, all but one said they’d like to come back; we have close to 50 this year. Main Street Square has turned out to be an outstanding venue, it’s a common ground, it’s right downtown Rapid City, convenient, plenty of additional places to shop, there’s room to grow, it’s a beautiful setting.”
On Friday evening, July 17, the Journey Museum will host an Artist’s Award reception from 5-8pm, providing an opportunity to meet the artists, preview artwork, enjoy entertainment and regional foods. Over $16,000 in prize money will be awarded as part of a juried art show. Judges for the juried art show include Masayuki Nagase(The Sculpture Project), Professor Jace Decory, M.Ed., Michael Pangburn, SDAC and the Honorable Jeffrey Viken, Chief U.S. District Judge.
The gathering and art market was originally inspired by The Sculpture Project: Passage of Wind and Water and artist Masayuki Nagase and his themes of balance and transformation. In addition to the artists booths, there will be art demonstrations, opportunities for kids to make art, regalia making, storytelling and flute making.
Main Street Square schedule opens at 10am with an opening ceremony with Wanbli Ska Drum and Dance Society and a veteran’s honoring; 11:15am Dallas Chief Eagle and Children’s Dance Workshop; 1pm Finger style blues artist Cory Morin; 2:45pm Gyasi Ross with emerging spoken word artists Shawn Little Thunder and Mike “Witko” Clifford; 4:30pm AlterNative Rock with The Cody Blackbird Band; 6:00pm Scatter Their Own and 7pm Frank Waln.
“All of us are looking forward to a great day,” said Huntington, “we’re already planning for next year, our website will be open on Saturday, July 18, for artist applications for the 4th Native Arts Market in July of 2016.”
